"... presents..." (III) : Jesse Kauppila's Aquatint Explosions

Friday, June 13, 2008 Jesse Kauppila comes to Malmö to organize a series of explosive experiments in one of our parks. Contact us for details if you'd like to participate. Here's how Jesse described his project:

"Francisco Goya pioneered a revolutionary printmaking technique that he used to quickly produce half-tones and create his monumental “The Disasters of War.” This technique is called aquatint. To create an aquatint Goya used a box full of resin that he spun like a hamster wheel. After spinning, this agitated resin fell evenly on a metal printing plate placed in the aquatint box. When heated the resin adhered to the plate which was then be placed in acid. Acid would eat away at the parts of the plate not covered by melted resin. When inked, such a plate produced a halftone.

While quick and easy this technique did not come without dangers. The spinning of the aquatint box could create sparks that would ignite the volatile resin dust. This would result in a devastating explosion. Instead of an occupational hazard, I believe these explosions contain creative potential. A similar explosion can be created, the ignited aquatint particles directed towards the printing plate, these particles then immediately adhere to the plate.

In this experiment six different lengths of tube are used to direct the explosion towards six different printing plates. The effects of two of these tube lengths are then examined in more detail; three explosions from each of these tube lengths are then each projected onto a separate plate. All plates are then placed in acid All plates will be printed in black. The three plates from each repeated explosion will be superimposed in color. Further results may be analyzed through mapping and musical composition.

The "... presents…" Series (I) : Franklin's VDC Copy Centre

"...presents…" is a series of informal talks taking place across the virtual space that is the Internet using Skype video-conferencing technologies that allows us to link spaces in Malmö, Sweden and Columbus, Ohio (USA). The project was initiated as a collaboration between the members of the artist collective C.CRED and the alt.SPACE Group in Malmö and the US based ar group Red76 as part of the project Franklin's VDC Copy Centre initiated by Red76, but we hope to find ways to keep the project going also once this exhibition is over.

For the VDC Copy Centre project we have invited one or more friend(s) to come and have some food and drinks with us each Wednesday evening, 8 pm Swedish time/1 pm in Ohio, and to present something – a project, a text, an idea, anything. The presentations will be streamed ‘live’ to the exhibition space in Columbus, Ohio. From the replies we received, we’ve come up with the following program:
